Smartphones and tablets work a lot like pacifiers: Hand one to a fussy toddler, and he'll quickly quiet down, mesmerized by the colors and shapes moving across the screen.

Pediatricians used to say those sweet bouts of screen-filled silence might ultimately do more harm than good in the long run.

But the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has since softened its tone on children's digital media use, lessening the guilt-trip that many parents might feel as their toddler peacefully pokes at an iPad.

The national group last week unveiled a new set of guidelines that allow for certain types of media use by younger children and set broader parameters for older kids to keep them well-rested, physically active and socially engaged. Read more...

While stumping for his father in Maine, Donald Trump Jr. got stuck in some unusual traffic Tuesday.

He found himself at the back end of the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile — a promotional vehicle shaped in the likeness of a hot dog — and posted the results to Twitter.

Great morning in Maine but it's not everyday that you get stuck behind the #wienermobile at the drive through! http://pic.twitter.com/KkLA8l1zW5

According to the Portland Press Herald, Trump Jr.'s Maine visit includes a stop at a shooting range and lunch at a hot dog stand in Lewiston — making the car a fitting sighting. Read more...

LOS ANGELES — A pro Overwatch league has been confirmed, but it may not have been done on purpose — Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick seemed to offhandedly mention the new venture during a speech about the growing popularity of esports.

Intentional or not, at least we know we're getting one.

Though the Vanity Fair News Summit in San Francisco may not be where you'd expect major esports news to break, that's exactly where Kotick's remarks seemed to confirm that an Overwatch league is in the works:

And that was it — there were no further details from Kotick or Overwatch developers Blizzard. Mashable's inquiries to Blizzard were not immediately returned. Read more...

AT&T's upcoming internet-based TV service is huge — and a little pricey

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fcard%2fimage%2f259579%2f2015_2f03_2f02_2f09_2fslingtv_thu.88473

Get ready, cord cutters: The biggest online TV package is launching soon.

AT&T is going to offer a near-complete version of its usual cable and satellite TV bundle through the internet with more than 100 channels on offer, the company's CEO announced on Tuesday.

It won't come cheap. The service is going to cost $35 per month, making it pricer than, for instance, the $20-per-month Sling TV base package.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson announced the pricing and channel count for the new service at a Wall Street Journal event on Tuesday.

The upcoming release of AT&T's internet TV service has taken on an even higher profile following the company's acquisition of Time Warner last week for more than $85 billion. Time Warner owns a variety of TV assets including TNT, TBS and HBO, as well as Warner Bros. movie studio.  Read more...

It's almost time to go back to Stars Hollow, and Netflix releasing the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life trailer just made the looming premiere date of Nov. 25 feel tangible at last. For Gilmore fans new and old, the trailer feels like early Christmas — or more aptly, Thanksgiving.

First of all: "Wow! Are we excited about this!"

Carving a pumpkin using a water jet cutter is simply mesmerizing

The YouTube trend of crushing things with a hydraulic press  was huge in 2016, but now it's time for a less destructive, yet still mesmerizing machine.

Thankfully, the Waterjet Channel is here to fill the void. The channel recently "carved" a picture-perfect pumpkin, using a 60,000 psi water jet cutter.

While this may take some of the fun out of the ritual, it eliminates the whole scooping, messy bit.
