At Tartu University in Estonia, student corporations and fraternities traditionally held "pledge theatres" in late autumn, staging plays as rites of initiation for prospective members.

The all-male pledges were expected to play both male and female roles. As they were all eager to gain admission to the club or frat, they committed themselves to costuming and makeup with a serious degree of dignity and attention.

The results were often quite beautiful, and the topical and entertaining plays became a beloved tradition even to audiences beyond the student body. Read more...
